A hyperbaric oxygen chamber does two things at once: it raises the air pressure around you, and it gives you more oxygen to breathe. Everything else is detail. Understanding those two numbers is most of what you need to read any chamber's spec sheet with a clear head.1
Pressure inside a chamber is given in ATA, atmospheres absolute. One ATA is ordinary air at sea level, the pressure you are sitting in right now. 1.5 ATA is roughly what you would feel about five metres underwater. Raising the pressure lets more oxygen dissolve directly into the blood plasma, not only the amount your red blood cells already carry. That is the whole mechanism, and it is worth understanding rather than taking on trust.
A good chamber holds the pressure you set. On the AtmosChamber, automatic relief valves keep the cabin at the ATA you chose, so the number you set is the number you get, not a figure that sags over a long session.
The chamber pressurises over five to ten minutes, and you clear your ears the same way you would on a descending plane. It holds for the session, usually three quarters of an hour or more, then depressurises over another five to ten minutes. You breathe pressurised air with the oxygen kept safely below 25% of the cabin, behind three independent pressure-relief valves and a type-examined pressure vessel. It is calm and undramatic, which is the point.
Two numbers describe any chamber: the pressure it holds, and the oxygen it delivers.
Two formats cover most of the range. The soft-shell Air chambers inflate to 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, fold down, and move between rooms on a standard socket, which suits a home that cannot give a chamber a permanent spot. The hard-shell Solo is a fixed composite vessel that holds up to 2.0 ATA, with an internal and external touchscreen, for a room that is genuinely dedicated to it. Higher pressure is not automatically better; it is a different tool for a different setting.
This is where most marketing overreaches, so here is the plain version. In hospitals, hyperbaric oxygen at higher pressures and under medical supervision has specific, established clinical uses. That is clinical medicine, delivered by clinicians, and it is not what a wellness chamber is for. Consumer use is typically mild hyperbaric, around 1.3 to 1.5 ATA, and the evidence for general recovery and wellbeing there is still emerging and often overstated in advertising. We can tell you exactly what the chamber does, raise the pressure and deliver oxygen, and we leave claims about treating or curing anything to clinicians and the research. If a seller promises more than that, be skeptical.
