Cold works, but not for the reasons most people repeat, and not at the doses most people use. Here is what the evidence supports and how to put a number on a cold session instead of guessing.

What cold exposure actually does to recovery

Whole-body cold is used for recovery in a few ways. It can ease how sore you feel after hard training, it gives the body a sharp, controllable cold signal that many people find calming, and it turns recovery into a deliberate daily habit. None of these are magic. All of them are dose-dependent, which is exactly why a chamber that holds its temperature matters more than the lowest number on the dial.1

Temperature is a dose, not a headline.

A session at −110°C held steady for three minutes is a different stimulus to a brief dip at −150°C that drifts back toward −90°C as the door opens and closes. Four variables decide what a cold session actually delivers.

  • Temperature. The set point the chamber holds, in °C. Lower is not always better; consistent is.
  • Duration. Time at temperature, typically two to three minutes for a standard session.
  • Recovery speed. How fast the chamber returns to its set point between users. Session 10 should match session 1.
  • Frequency. Daily, on rest days, or timed around training. Match this to your goal, not to a habit someone else keeps.

What it does not do.

Cold immediately after a heavy resistance session may work against the muscle you trained to build. If the goal of that block is hypertrophy, separate the cold from the lift by a few hours, or use it on rest days. For endurance work, conditioning, and general recovery between sessions, the timing is far less fussy. The point is to match the tool to the goal rather than apply it reflexively.

The right question is not how cold, but how cold, for how long, how often, and recovered how fast between users.

A simple way to dose it.

Start at −110°C for two to three minutes, once per day, and hold the temperature constant rather than chasing a colder number. Track how you feel and how you sleep across two weeks.
